Kettering City Council to Vote on Sale of Land for Student Housing

Kettering City Council next week will consider the sale of three acres of land within walking distance of The Modern College of Design’s campus for the construction of student housing.

The Modern began exploring the project during their initial campus expansion, which tripled the size of their facility and opened in 2018. The Modern has invested over $7M in expansion and renovations to the campus since 2017 to accommodate the growing enrollment in The Modern’s Associate’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree Completion programs.

Each year, approximately 60–70% of The Modern’s student body relocates to Kettering to attend the college. The Modern currently partners with Collegiate Housing Services to assist students in finding safe and comfortable accommodations in the Kettering area. The Modern plans to build housing to accommodate up to 100 first-year students.

“Offering exclusive student housing is important to students’ growth and development as they transform into future leaders of the design industry,” shared President Jessica Barry. “I am thankful for our strong relationship with the City of Kettering, which has allowed the college to develop into one of the top design schools in the country. Through our strategic plan, we have expanded our campus and offered our first Bachelor’s Degree program. Offering exclusive student housing will allow us to expand our recruitment efforts and attract creative and diverse students, both nationally and internationally, to Kettering.”

City of Kettering Economic Development Manager Gregg Gorsuch stated, "We are impressed with the expansion of the school and the investment they've made not only in their students but in our community. We have enjoyed watching the Modern grow and look forward to their continued success in Kettering."

Council will vote on the proposal Tuesday. If approved, The Modern will spend the next six months exploring the project further.
