The Modern Supports Declaration Against Racism and Announces Initiatives

Today, The Modern College of Design joined 37 local businesses and organizations in supporting the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce’s declaration against racism, which supports the passage of the city, county, and state resolutions declaring racism as a public health crisis. The Modern recognizes its responsibility to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus and in the community.

“As the tragic events of the past month–including the killing of George Floyd–exposed the undercurrent of systemic racism and injustice in our country, we are angered by the ongoing racism and other forms of discrimination that our Black students, faculty, staff, and alumni are enduring” shared President Jessica Barry. “The Modern does not tolerate discrimination in any form and we are dedicated to advancing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. We are hopeful for the future and encouraged to see our community protesting to end systemic racism and police brutality towards African Americans and advocating for change.”

The Modern administration is developing initiatives to help students, faculty, and staff understand diverse perspectives, identify unconscious biases, and develop skills to make The Modern a more welcoming and inclusive environment. Ongoing training will be provided that targets awareness, communication, attitudes, and behaviors.
