The Modern's 'Design is Everything' Summer Camp 2023: Empowering High School Students to Explore the World of Design.

The Modern College of Design’s 2023 Summer Camp is in the books and was a huge success!

The event, hosted on June 24th, 2023, encouraged high school students to step out of their comfort zones and explore their creativity.

The Modern hosted four interactive sessions that allowed students to engage with Modern instructors, other high school students, equipment, and campus. In one session, the photography studio buzzed with three unique sets allowing students to experiment with lighting and motion. Students were encouraged by Paul Garcher, a web design instructor at The Modern, to explore campus through a scavenger hunt that had them flipping through art books, designing buttons, playing a competitive game of pop-a-shot, and searching through student work on campus. In another session with design instructor Mary Page, students used their traditional art skills to design a canvas that was a small piece of a large mural that was constructed at the end of the day. Finally, writing instructor Amanda Green helped students learn the importance of creative writing in the design industry, and students wrote creative short story concepts. The day concluded with a completion ceremony where students, parents, faculty, and staff celebrated students pursuing their creative passions!

“It was great to witness students from as far as Chicago and Pittsburgh exploring our campus,” shared Justin Morter, Creative Director at The Modern. “They witnessed firsthand why design is everything and how their passions can be pursued at The Modern.”

This year’s sold-out event hosted 40 total high school students. Next year’s camp will take place on June 22nd, 2024, and The Modern plans to increase student capacity due to the popularity and excitement seen on campus this past Saturday.

Thank you to those who participated in the Design is Everything Summer Camp this year!
